Just stumbled across this listing for a 1989 Alfa Romeo Milano Verde and it has peaked my interest. I've done some research into Alfas but this would be my first, so I'm wondering if I would be in over my head.

Looks like a rat for 4 grand. I have a silver with 30K miles on it I didnt even spend close to that on. Plus the rust and the ratty interior. Nice it is a verde, but not worth the money

That rust is in a VERY bad place. All of those other little things (headliner, seat covers) are going to add up fast.

The Verdo is the one to have, but most of these that I've seen on Alfabb.com go for 4-8k or so without rust, depending on cosmetics & interior condition. I've recently been looking at GTV-6s, and have learned a lot about Milanos by proxy. The V6 is a pretty tough engine, though they have some maintenance idiosyncrasies like the multi-piece coolant manifold at the front & interesting valve adjustments. Make sure the transaxle shifts properly & driveline doesn't shake, that's where you'll have to spend some money if it's got issues. I've only driven a GTV6 & not a Milano, but if you're into the styling I'll bet it's loads of fun. In wet climates they corrode like they've been parked in salt water, so watch out.

I would call around to local repair shops and find out some repair costs. Brakes. shocks. struts timing belts if equipped.. Try and a realistic cost of maintenance before you purchase the vehicle.

Let's play a game of "Select the right words"

"As you might expect from a 1980s Italian car, ownership can be either thrilling or terrifying"

"Unless, of course, you enjoy watching your wallet hemorrhage cash while you play catch-up on a car with deferred maintenance (ask me how I know)"

Not sure how much they go for over there so can't comment on the price (seems like it should be a bit tidier for that), but how are you with working on cars & can you weld? The untraced brake fault is the kind of thing that's probably a pretty minor fault but would take a while to get to the bottom of, so might cost if you couldn't do it DIY but the main thing is the welding.

It looks like under the plastic wheel arches it could be quite hefty. I'd only go for it if I could weld, to be honest.

DO: Buy a Milano.

DON'T buy that one.

I almost bought one in waaaaaaaaaaay better condition that for around 2k USD. Granted it wasn't a Verde but still. Wait until you find one that is straight with maybe a few little issues but nothing major like rust or gross interior. Then buy an Alfa and go for it! You won't regret having an Alfa in your life!
